A FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE- Oct 23 @ 7pm A FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE
at St. Andrew on October 23, @7pm
“OSTROV”

SYNOPSIS: Winner of 5 Nika Awards (Russian Oscars) including Best Film. Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow-monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine.

The plot begins as a story about an ordinary man, who yielded to his weakness and preferred killing his mate and saving his own life to being killed himself. The second part of the movie is a story of no man, but of a soul, attempting to become forgiven and find piece. The picture makes you experience its suffering and need for repentance, as if it were yours - so it can be called a kind of spiritual masterpiece. During this experience you can look at your way of living with fresh eyes, which results in a kind of real purification. The fact that a picture which neither cannot be called an action nor contains erotic scenes still is able to thrill people is very pleasant!

All in all a very intriguing and thought provoking story which will leave us all thinking and talking about if for a long time.

Life Line Screening Radiology -Nov 21 • Over 700,000 Strokes will occur this year alone! •Stroke will cause approximately 160,000 deaths this year – 3rd leading cause of death in U.S. •Stroke is the #1 Reason for Nursing Home Entries
Life Line Screening Radiology will be performing a day of preventative health screenings at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday, November 21st, 2009.Life Line Screening Radiology screens the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque (most strokes are linked to carotid artery blockage) and the arteries in the legs for peripheral arterial disease, which is linked to heart disease. They offer a third test that screens for aneurysms in the aortic vessel in the abdomen. Ruptured aortic aneurysms are the 13th leading cause of death in America (10th among men)! Life Line Screening Radiology will also offer a bone density screening to test your risk for osteoporosis.
“Why not just go to my doctor for these tests?” you may ask. The answer, although relatively surprising, is that your physician cannot order these tests without clear evidence of symptoms. Ironically, most people who suffer a stroke or aortic abdominal aneurysm never show any signs or symptoms that a major medical catastrophe is about to occur.
These non-invasive, completely painless vascular screenings take about 10 minutes each, and are offered for just forty-five dollars (5 vascular tests for $149.00).
YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER. Appointments spaces are limited, so please sign up now by calling 1-800-636-0418.

Book Discussion - October 1, 6, 15 Practical Teachings on the Christian Life ~ Abba Dorotheos
October 1, 6, 15 @ 7:30 pm.
Saint Dorotheos of Gaza belongs to the teachers of the desert. He was a spiritual master who grounded his whole existence on the love of God and the obedience of His commandments.
Saint Dorotheos lived in the 6th Century and with his spiritual instructions proved himself to be a personality of exceptional greatness for all ages. His Practical Teaching on the Christian Life, Lessons and Letters, makes him an influential voice in the Christian communities, both monastic and in the world.
The wisdom of Saint Dorotheos has it challenges for today and helps us to learn what unconditional love for God and for each other truly means.
Each session focuses on one of Saint Dorotheos’ homilies.
This Fall we will study Saint Dorotheos’ lessons: “On Resentment”, September 23th. ; “On the Fear of God”, October 1st.; “On Building and Construction of the Virtues of the Soul”, October 6th.; and “On going along the Way of God with Purpose and Vigilance”, October 15th.
Free copies of the homilies in both Greek and English will be available in the rack outside of the bookstore.
Please join us for this very interesting discussion series!!!

help Melina and Alexia toward physical recovery August 25, 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The teenage daughters of my friend were involved in a very serious car accident. As a result of this accident, the girls Melina and Alexia sustained serious and life threatening physical trauma that has resulted in numerous surgeries and painful procedures in order to help them survive their extensive injuries, and ultimately move them both toward physical recovery.

As faithful stewards of St. Andrew, I humbly ask that each of you help with a financial gift, no matter how small, in order to help these two beautiful and faithful sisters in their long and painful road to recovery. It is times such as these that we are called to put our faith into action. Our Lord Jesus Christ requires each of us to love our neighbor as ourselves and to give alms to those in need. My brothers and sisters, there is no doubt that now is the time to put our prayers into action, and to help our family members in need.

May Christ our God, the true physician of our souls and bodies, continue to heal and guide our beloved Melina and Alexia as they progress to a full recovery.

Please make all contribution payable to St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Cathedral and mail to 3511 Yoakum Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006-4388. Make sure you place the names “Melina & Alexia” in the memo line in order that the funds are properly credited.

In Christ,
Father John Theodosion
