LEARNING TO LIVE THE DIVINE LITURGY The Divine Liturgy is the public worship of all the faithful. This act of worshipping is offered by the people of God and the Priest, towards God. Its divine gift, Holy Communion, is geared for us all who make up the people of God. Thus, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated by the people of God for the people of God: by us and for us.
We will continue to examine the various parts of the Divine Liturgy service, attempting to enhance our worship as we celebrate together.
THE LITANY OF PEACE: “IN PEACE, LET US PRAY TO THE LORD”
After the priest says, “Blessed is the Kingdom” the Great Litany or Litany of Peace [Page 1 in the Liturgy Book] begins. This includes all the petitions regarding our life as a whole as well as requests concerning peace. It is our initial presence before God. The first three prayers are dedicated to peace. The primary thing that we need in order to stand before God is peace. We should be peaceful in ourselves and among each other. When we are in the church everything should be done in peace. We ask Christ to give us His peace, which with His Sacrifice on the Cross He granted to the world. We gain peace through repentance.
“KYRIE ELEISON” (LORD, HAVE MERCY)
The words “Lord, have mercy” is the briefest prayer in the Church. It says everything. The prayer “Kyrie Eleison” does miracles. The Divine Liturgy is not just a simple ceremony, a reception or a concert but a Celebration, a Mystery, a Sacrifice, a Miracle, in which we should all be partakers as the mystical Body of Christ. All of us, children and adults, who are present during the Divine Liturgy ought to respond, “Kyrie Eleison”! Listen to each petition prayerfully so that you can ask with understanding for God’s mercy! In order for us to be saved, we are in need of divine mercy. Without God’s mercy there is no salvation.
“HELP US, SAVE US, HAVE MERCY ON US, AND KEEP US, O GOD, BY THY GRACE”
This last petition of the Great Litany [Page 3 in the Liturgy Book] asks God for His Divine Grace. “Grace” is the love of God. Even though man is guilty, sinful, unworthy, God’s compassion and goodness is such that He grants it even if a person has not asked for it! Grace is a gift, a donation, a present!

Share your Christmas & New Years Wishes Some volunteer, some donate. We know that our parishioners do both. Saint Andrew Philoptochos appreciate all that you do and we are grateful for your generosity which helps us offer hope and strength to those who are most in need.
The global economic crisis has affected each and every one of us. A greater number of requests for assistance have been presented to us and WE HAVE RESPONDED.
It is our tradition to mail Christmas and New Year’s greetings from parishioners to the entire church family. This year we will again select a Holiday Card which will be drawn by one of the children in our parish.
