PLEASE REMEMBER FR. GREGORY WAYNICK AND HIS FAMILY IN YOUR PRAYERS It is with deep sadness that we report to you that a great tragedy has befallen Fr. Gregory Waynick and his family at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Mooresville.

On Sunday afternoon, there was a fire at their home while most of the family was away. Their son Josh was at home when the fire broke out. He went back into the house to rescue their dog. Unfortunately neither Josh nor the dog survived.
Arrangements have not been finalized. We will update this website as we know more.
Our love and sympathy go out to Waynick Family in this tragic time.
May Josh’s memory be eternal.

FROM THE CHANCELLOR'S DESK May 7, 2009

Dear Reverend Clergy and Beloved Parish Council Leaders:

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

On Behalf of His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios, I wish to convey to each and every one of you His Eminence’s fervent desire that EVERY PARISH in the Metropolis participate in the Biennial Metropolis Album currently being produced for the upcoming 2009 Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Laity Assembly and Philoptochos Conference. As you know this event is being held in Tampa Bay from June 11 – 14, 2009. We are hoping to see representatives from every parish as well as the proistamenoi at this important event in the life of our Metropolis

The album is an important reflection of our Holy Metropolis and the many parishes within it. It can not be complete without the participation of each and every parish! This year’s theme of the conference, “THE DAY AFTER TODAY: OUR YOUTH” is carried as the theme of the Album. We wish to demonstrate the glorious work of every parish regarding our youth ministries.

While we understand that economic conditions are especially difficult for many this year, the small cost of participation, $250 is necessary to cover the cost of production, and should be affordable to even the smallest of parishes.

We therefore expect that any parishes that have not yet submitted their entries will do so immediately and send via email to tagos@aol.com.
Checks may be made out to Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Laity Conference and sent to 31581 US 19 North, Palm Harbor, 34684.

Faithfully yours,
+V. Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis
Chancellor

ALBUM PARTICIPATION REMINDER FROM DR. TED VLAHOS The Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Laity Assembly & Philoptochos Conference is to be held this year in Clearwater, FL, June 11 – 14, 2009. We are looking forward to welcoming you to our City, our Community, and our church, Holy Trinity. A commemorative album of our Metropolis is being assembled for all delegates and Parishes, and we need input from your Parish.

Each Parish will be featured as a viable contributor to the mission of Christ. We ask that you appoint someone from your Parish to prepare a one page presentation which will be included as your Parish’s page in the yearbook. Your information should include the following:

• The Name and Address of your Parish
• Year your Parish was established
• Names of Clergy
• Names of Clergy Staff
• Name of Parish Council President
• Number of Parish Family Members
• Photograph of the Icon which bears the name of your Parish
• The theme of this year’s event is “Our Youth”, and so each Parish is asked to describe their Youth programs or Ministries. A brief synopsis of the groups’ activities or unique experiences might be included
• The Ministries and contribution of your Philoptochos Society

All Parishes will be featured and each one will appear on a one page biography with photographs if you choose to send them in. We are asking that each sponsor contribute $250 in order to help offset production costs. In addition, ads are available for individual purchase. Please contact John Tsacrios regarding personal ads.

If you have any questions please contact John C. Tsacrios by email: tagos@aol.com or by cell at 727-741-9710. It is highly recommended that ad materials be forwarded via email as attachments. Contributions may be made payable to: “2009 Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Laity Assembly” and sent to T.P. Vlahos MD,
31581 US. 19 N, Palm Harbor, FL 34684. In addition, please note that in order to be included in the Album, we must receive your materials and contributions by the deadline date of April 30, 2009.

FAMILY Family is the most essential unit of our
society. St John Chrysostom wrote, “The
human family constitutes the primary and
essential element of human society… peace
in society will be a direct result of peace in
the family.”

But for many of us there is no peace from the stresses and demands of our modern life. We have often heard that our Church should be an important part of our family—our spiritual family.

But how does this part of our family help us with our lives and challenges we face? How do we live out our Orthodox Christian Faith daily?

HOLY TRINITY, New Orleans, LA Philoptochos collected donations of $10 Wal-Mart gift cards for the residents of Penelope House to assist them in purchasing basic necessities such as toiletries and prescription medications. Did you know that domestic violence is the single major cause of injury to women in the U.S. Every 18 seconds a woman is battered in the United States. Penelope House is a model domestic violence center in Mobile, Alabama started by the Daughters of Penelope. Through advocacy programs and counseling, Penelope House helps battered women achieve economic and social independence.

ST. PHOTIOS SHRINE ANNOUNCES WEEKLY SUPPLICATION SERVICES National Shrine Announces Weekly Supplication Service Schedule

To supplicate means to ask for something in a humble manner. In this spirit the chaplain of St. Photios Greek Orthodox Shrine, Rev Father Nikitas Theodosion, invites the public with the Orthodox faithful, to join in prayer at the Service of Supplication to the Virgin Mary, in the Chapel of St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Photios Chapel from May 8 – July 31, 2009.
Prayers are offered up for the health and well being of those included on the prayer list of the Light A Candle program and for the peace of the world and salvation of all souls. This is done according to the Orthodox definition of the Theotokos, or God bearer which is seen as an intercessor as the all-holy Mother of God. This is clearly depicted in Orthodox iconography.
She points to her Son showing the way in an icon called the Hodegetria. She embraces her Son, cheek to cheek, exhibiting pure motherly love with the reverence of a daughter in the icon called the Glykfilousa. She entreats her Son with out-stretched arms in prayer at the foot of the cross and often from the left side of the Royal Gates on the icon screen of an Orthodox church, called the Deesis. In terms of her relationship to Christ, our Savior, we say the Hodegetria demonstrates her Son’s divinity, the Glykfilousa demonstrates His humanity, and the Deesis shows us Mary, Christ’s mother, petitioning her Son’s help, thereby indicating the Son as the source of salvation.
The St. Photios Chapel is located in the colonial Spanish Quarter in Avero House, 41 St George Street, St. Augustine, Florida. It is a sacred place built in memory of our ancestors of Greek heritage. June 26, 2009 marks the 241st anniversary of the landing of Greeks in America who with Corsicans, Italians and Minorcans joined the Turnbull colony in search of a better life and settled in what today is known as New Smyrna Beach, FL.

METROPOLIS OF ATLANTA ORATORICAL FESTIVAL HOLY TRINITY, New Orleans, LA hosted this year’s Metropolis of Atlanta St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. The twenty five speakers who attended gave
thoughtful and inspiring speeches on April 4th, and – with their families – participated in a
weekend filled with activities. Over seventy-five guests came to New Orleans for the Oratorical
as well as a number of distinguished clergy. Among those who came during the course of the
weekend were His Eminence Metropolitan Theoklitos of Vresthena, as well as V. Rev. Fr.
Grigorios Tatsis, representing His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta (who was
participating at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople),
the Rev. Fr. James Berends (Sts. Irene, Nicholas, & Raphael Church, Cumming, Georgia), and
the Rev. Fr. Anthony Salzman (St. Philothei Church, Athens, Georgia); also present was Mrs.
Joanne Lindholm (St. Demetrios Church, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), Atlanta Metropolis Oratorical
Co-Chairperson (along with Fr. Berends). The weekend’s activities included the Akathist Hymn
and a dinner on Friday evening; the Oratorical speeches, lunch, an afternoon in the city, with
local Goyans serving as official hosts and hostesses, to Jackson Square for tours of the
Presbytere and Cabildo museums and shopping, and dinner on Saturday; then Divine Liturgy and
a sumptuous reception on Sunday. Overall, the weekend gave ample proof of the relevance of
the Orthodox Faith to the youth of the Church, as well as their articulate expression of that Faith.
Our thanks to all who helped make the Oratorical such a wonderful and memorable event, and in
particular – many, many thanks to the Oratorical Host Parish Chair, Sandy Bouzon, for all he
hard work and dedication.
