FROM THE CHANCELLOR`S DESK Reverend Clergy and the Faithful of the Holy and God-protected Metropolis of Atlanta

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I have just arrived in Tampa for our Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy-Laity Assembly, and as I await the beginning of our Assembly, I wanted to again express our gratitude and appreciation to Fr. James Rousakis, the Parish Council and all the Faithful of Holy Trinity, Dr. Ted Vlahos, Mrs. Jeannie Demas and all their co-workers for their hard work in organizing what promises to be a truly productive and enjoyable Assembly!

I hope and pray that clergy and lay representatives from all our parish communities were able to take time out from their busy schedules to gather as one family of faith here in Clearwater, so that all of us, clergy and Faithful alike, can be part of the discussions and decisions that will affect the future of our Metropolis and our Holy Orthodox Church.

Looking forward to seeing all of you here in Tampa!

Faithfully yours,
V. Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis

GETTING THE DIRECTIONS RIGHT In the opening books of the Old Testament, we are given a detailed account of the survival of God’s people in the wilderness over the course of a long period of time. While Moses was leading the Chosen People out of Egyptian bondage and to liberation, a problem arose. That problem was based on the people’s impatience with the Lord’s directions and timing; they insisted upon their own ideas of where they needed to go and how best to get there.

While Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God, the people grew impatient. Rather than awaiting the Lord’s promise, they took matters into their own hands and fashioned a golden idol to worship. As ludicrous as that may sound to us, the same foolishness keeps happening today – and by those who profess faith in Christ!

After Moses cast down the tablets with the Commandments, and then ground down the golden calf that the people were sinfully worshipping, he then sprinkled the dust into the water and forced them to drink it! (Exodus 32:20) Then, the Lord led His people, under Moses’ leadership, through the wilderness for forty years, that none of the offenders, but only their children, set foot upon the promised land.

Too often, we confuse our directions with the Lord’s. Most Christians are well aware of the right path most of the time. However, too often people give in to other, more immediate interests rather than what is right for the soul. It is easy, yet still dangerous, to appease the worldly, the material, the physical, at the expense of the spiritual because, among other reasons, the soul lives onto eternity.

At Exodus 32:26, Moses commanded: “Who is on the Lord’s side? Let him come unto me!” The Great Lawgiver did not need a spiritual “GPS” to determine the right direction, he simply listened to God. For us to have the correct directions, we need to do the same thing. The objective is not complicated, but the impact is indeed eternal.

Let us come together this Sunday, with our own directions clear, and stand together on the Lord’s side.

Fr. Anthony Stratis, HOLY TRINITY, New Orleans, LA

FASTING Fasting, or abstaining from food, was a discipline practiced by our Lord himself. It was after forty days of prayer and fasting in the wilderness, that Jesus victoriously faced the temptations of the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). He asked his disciples to use fasting, coupled with prayer, as a means to achieve spiritual victories (Matthew 17:21; Mark 9:29; Luke 2:37), and the example of the Lord was followed by the disciples in their apostolic ministry and instruction to the early Christians (Acts 14:23; 27:9; 1 Corinthians 7:5; 2 Corinthians 6:5, 11:27).

The practice of fasting is rich with meaning. Many of the Holy Fathers throughout the history of the Church have written about the significance of fasting. Saint Basil, for example, tells us that fasting is not simply abstaining from food; it is, more importantly, the avoidance of sin. The Church in her hymnology describes fasting as the mother of chastity and prudence, as the accuser of sin and as the advocate of repen-tance, the life worthy of angels and the salvation of humans. Fasting becomes all of these when observed in the proper spirit.

In its most basic sense, fasting is abstinence from food. But it is far more than that. Through a very natural process created by God, we consume food for sustenance, energy, and life. However, we can be inclined to take more than we need or to be so controlled by our physi-cal desire that we focus only on what we eat, neglecting our relationships and our spiritual needs, and even endangering our well-being. By subordinating the desires of the body, fasting helps us reestablish a proper order in our lives as Christians. It helps us to open our minds and souls to the guidance of the Spirit and to break away from our cap-tivity to bodily appetites and selfish desires. Through fasting we over-come the burdens and pressures of physical gratification that are placed upon us in our world, and through our faith in Christ we are renewed and transformed into the holy people God created us to be. In addition, through fasting we move away from an entanglement and conformity to sinful passions and desires, into a blessed life filled with the presence, power, and grace of God.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The birth of the Christian Church began at Pentecost, when God saw fit to pour out the Holy Spirit. It was one of the most wonderful and exciting moments in the history of the Christian faith. This descent of the Holy Spirit is the new covenant by God with the new Israel, the Church. The Holy Spirit had fallen on the lives of believers. People were filled with the passion and fires of the Holy Spirit. They were gathered from every
persuasion and city, every nation and land, all glorifying God.
The Holy Spirit descended upon the church on the Day of Pentecost. How can we be indifferent in the light of that event? We all need the power of the Spirit today and that power is still available to all who ask for it.
“The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit” as stated during the Sacrament of Chrismation provides us with the promise that Christ communicated just before His Ascension. The Spirit empowers us to attain the fullness of humanity. Wherever we learn to live in
faith, the gifts of the Holy Spirit will be alive and well. These are gifts of love, joy, peacefulness, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control.
The disciples had spent three years living with Christ. They had witnessed His death and resurrection, but it took the power of the Holy Spirit to transform them into the great men that they were. We too have that power of the Holy Spirit living within us.
Yet, so few of us know how to tap into that power. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us the ability to be a witness to the world. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us words to say when
our minds go blank. It is the Holy Spirit that makes us able to carry out Christ’s command to preach to all the nations and make disciples of every nation. If we do not know how to use the Spirit, it hinders His work in us. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to love the unlovable, minister to the unwanted, serve those who reject us and grow closer to the kingdom of God.
And it is the Holy Spirit that gives us our power. It is the Holy Spirit that makes us work the way we were
meant too. When we use the Spirit we can do all things for Christ. We need to be filled with the Spirit.
Without the Spirit we can do nothing. With Him, we can turn a world upside down and shine God’s light into a dark world. When we are filled with the Spirit, we can be Christ in our world. Is your light being powered by the Holy Spirit so you can shine God’s light in His world? On that first Pentecost, the Apostles were ignited with the flame and zeal of the Holy Spirit. Peter stood up and preached and before the day ended over 3,000 people committed themselves to Christianity. These courageous and committed souls went out and in the words of St. Luke "turned the world upside down."
This is the spirit which gave birth to the Church. This spirit is the power of Pentecost! It is a redeeming
and sanctifying experience which compels the people of God to utilize the gifts that they have been
provided and be a light of Christ to all.
Fr. Robert O'Loughlin, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, Tallahassee, FL

PENTECOST and THE HOLY SPIRIT Come to Church and see for yourself and experience, “The Gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

The Greek Orthodox Church was born on the feast day of Pentecost, (Sunday June 7th). Fifty days after the Holy Pascha we celebrate the birthday of our Lord’s Church. The descent of the Holy Spirit on the believers in Christ was the crowning act of redemption and salvation of man by God. On Pentecost the disciples received the gifts of the Spirit of God and the Spirit of God descended on their heads. They became the first fruits of the redemptive work of Christ. Together with God`s Apostles the Church of Christ began on earth. For all Greek Orthodox Christians it marked the completion of the redemptive work of Christ and the inauguration of the New Covenant, the Covenant of Grace, which was poured down on us by the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost is a constant reminder of our own "baptism by the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5), which we received at the time of our Chrismation. The priest, anointing our body with the holy chrism pronounced the words: "The Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit," the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon us, taking possession of our souls. We then have become a living "temple of the Holy Spirit." (I Cor. 6:19)

Summertime is also here and for all of us near the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean we face yet another Hurricane season which officially started June 1st. Most of us will be making plans for a few weeks of vacation so we can unwind, enjoy the family, and recoup from a busy year. However, please do not forget to make plans for another Hurricane season. Disaster preparedness is part of our lives and should not be ignored. All of us live in and around the potential areas affected by stormy weather. We will begin to hear warnings of approaching storms. The level of severity depends upon wind speed and hurricane intensities. Hurricane warnings 1, 2,3,4,5 along with evacuations routes, plans are in place to keep us from harm. We must obey all warnings and evacuate when the storm is bearing down on us. Time is of the essence which will allow us to escape from possible destruction and even death.

Beginning Sunday June 7th our Chapel will add additional prayers for God to allow for calmer weather and protect us throughout the 2009 Hurricane Season. God save us and protect us from all calamity and distress.

Fr. Frank P. Mayernick, ST. ATHANASIOS, Gulf Shores, AL
