A HYMN OF PENTECOST

When the Most High God came down and confused the tongues, He divided the nations. When He distributed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity.
And with one voice we glorify the all-holy Spirit.
The Kontakion hymn that we sing on Pentecost Sunday reminds us of two episodes in the Bible that involve language. The first is the well-known
story, recorded in Genesis ch. 11, about the Tower of Babel, and the second is the event of Pentecost, recorded in Acts ch. 2.
The hymn says: "When the Most High God came down and confused the tongues (i.e. languages), He divided the nations."
The Bible says:
Now the whole earth was one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.
