Apolytikion of the Church
O Commanders of the Heavenly Host, we the unworthy beseech you, that through your entreaties you will fortify us, guarding us in the shelter of the wings of your ethereal glory, even as we fervently bow before you crying: "Deliver us from all danger, as Commanders of the Powers on high!

Kontakion
You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father. - Translation by Narthex Press

Apolytikion for The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary
In birth, you preserved your virginity; in death, you did not abandon the world, O Theotokos. As mother of life, you departed to the source of life, delivering our souls from death by your intercessions. -Translation by Narthex Press

Kontakion
Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life. -Translation by Narthex Press

And another thing too we learn, the self-restraint of the disciples which they practised in necessary things, and  ...Read Full Text >

THE MOTHER OF GOD
Fr. Michael Platanis, HOLY TRINITY, Columbia, SC
Julius Caesar ruled much of the world and named the fifth Roman month, July, after himself. He was betrayed and assassinated in the Senate and then replaced by his adopted son, Octavius. Octavius, who ruled as Caesar Augustus, ruled an even greater Roman Empire than Julius. He would be outdone in no way, giving the sixth month his own name:  ...Read Full Text >

Decisions on Some Palestinian and Jordanian Communities in the USA

August 5, 2008
After a long process that began in 1993 related to the ecclesiastical status of a portion of the Palestinian and Jordanian communities in the USA, the portion connected to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, there has been a final agreed decision by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem concerning these communities. The Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Jerusalem Patriarchate have agreed that the canonical and pastoral supervision of these communities and their clergy should belong to the canonically established jurisdiction in the United States which is the Eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne in America, that is, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Henceforth, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem no longer asserts any jurisdiction in the Western Hemisphere.  ...Read Full Text >

THE FEAST OF THE DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS

On 15th of August Orthodox Christians from all over the world celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Like all major feasts of the Church, the Dormition of the Theotokos is preceded by a fast, in our case a fifteen day fast, in order to honor the Virgin Mary through whom the mystery of incarnation took place. According to tradition, the burial of the Theotokos took place in the garden of Gethsemane, with all the Apostles miraculously there. Both tradition and the
iconography of the church point to one exception among the Apostles; St. Thomas was traveling to India and could
not come back in time. He arrived a day after the burial of the Theotokos and asked to be brought to the place of
interment to at least see the body of the Theotokos. In an ironical twist of events, the doubtful Thomas did not get to see the body of the Theotokos, because her body had been “assumed” (taken up) into heaven.
