Our Parish of Panagia celebrates the feast Day of the Dormition of the Theotokos this evening through tomorrow. Hierarchical Great Vespers will begin this evening at 7:00pm, with His Grace Bishop Demetrios officiating, assisted by the Metropolis of Chicago Clergy. At 11:00pm, the All-Night Vigil will begin (the schedule/times of those Services can be found in this weekly bulletin). On Monday morning, TWO Divine Liturgies will be celebrated: the first at 4:30am Orthros/5:30am Liturgy, followed by the second at 8:30am Orthros/10:00am Liturgy.
Annual Panagia Feast Day Appeal:
We are grateful to the many parishioners, supporters, and friends who have lovingly responded to our annual Panagia Feast Day Appeal. Your gift to our Blessed Theotokos and the Ministry of this Parish allows our mission to continue. Should you need an appeal envelope, they can be found at the Pangari in the Narthex. May the protection of our blessed Holy Mother of God be with us always.
Artoclasia Service for Panagia Feast Day Observance:
As is the tradition, our Parish honors the Feast Day of the Panagia with the Service of Artoclasia at BOTH the Great Vespers on August 14th, and the Divine Liturgy on August 15th. Those families still wishing to sponsor either of these Services by offering the bread, oil, and wine are asked to call the Church Office (773.626.3114), or see Father Timothy.
Panagia Feast Day Flowers:
We are forever grateful for the love and support of our parishioners and friends of Panagia who generously defray the expenses of the flowers that so beautifully adorn our Icons of our Patron Saint, the Blessed Theotokos, on Her Feast Day. If you are interested in making this gift specifically for the flower decorating of the Panagia, please inform the Church Office (773.626.3114), or see Father Timothy.
Thank You:
The Ladies Philoptochos Society, along with the Parish of Panagia, offers a big thank you to Mrs. Anita Papanek, who graciously will be underwriting the refreshment fellowship following the Divine Liturgy on Monday, August 15th. Throughout the many years, Anita has lovingly sponsored and underwritten the cost of this and many other events at our beloved Church of Panagia. We thank Anita for her continued love and support.

Offering With Gladness

2011 Stewardship:
We are forever grateful to all who have so lovingly responded and committed to 2011 with their stewardship pledge. Through your support, the Parish Council is better able to assess the needs and properly place priorities into the budget for the Lord’s ministry in our blessed Parish of Panagia. If you have not done so yet, please make every effort to fulfill your Stewardship pledge at your earliest convenience. You will find stewardship packets on the Pangari in the Church Narthex, or can ask a Parish Council member upon exiting the Church following today’s Worship Services.

Searching For Sunday Church School Aides:
Each year, our Church puts out the “call” for qualified and loving individuals (men and women) to join our Sunday Church School teaching staff for the 2011-12 school year. There is no more rewarding or fulfilling feeling, nor gift that we can give back to our Lord other than to impart to His children, the Word of God and the blessed teachings of our Holy Orthodox Church. Helping to mold the formation of a child’s faith and belief in the Lord is a commission that each of us has as baptized Orthodox Christians.
We ask that you give thought and prayer to the enormous opportunity of becoming a Sunday Church School aide to assist the teacher and children, please speak with Fr. Timothy or the Sunday Church School Director, Mrs. Christina Arvanites. The SCS academic year begins on Sunday, September 11th.
Sunday Church School To Begin on SUNDAY, September 11th:
We announce that our Panagia Sunday Church School will begin on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th. Divine Liturgy will begin promptly at 9:45am, in Saint Catherine Chapel. SCS Classes will take place immediately following the Divine Liturgy in Plato School. If you have not, as yet, registered your child for the 2011-12 school year, please do so by contacting the Church Office, securing a registration form online at our Church’s Website (www.assumptionchicago.org), or by speaking with our SCS Director, Mrs. Christina Arvanites. A booth will also be available at the Church Festival to get info and register your child as well.
2011 Annual Labor Day Festival:
Our Annual Labor Day Festival will be held on the Church grounds, Sunday, September 4th and Monday, September 5th. In anticipation of this annual event, forms will be mailed to your homes in the next few weeks. If you are able to assist, monetarily or to work during the Festival, please complete the form and return it to the Church Office when you receive it. As always, we appreciate all the assistance that we receive from our Stewards.
Assumption Choir:
Our Assumption Choir is in recess during the months of July and August. Marika Panton, our Choir Director, again puts out the call to any and all interested people who might like to become a part of the Church Choir. They are always looking for energetic voices to compliment the fine voices who are already a part of our Assumption Choir. If you are interested, you may contact Marika during the summer (708.366.7435).
Proper Church Etiquette:
Worship Services are vital instruments and components to our prayer development. In order to help us achieve this, we need to be cognizant of our fellow parishioners and all those around us. Therefore, please make sure that cell phones are completely turned off during Services. In addition, while we most welcome children to participate in the liturgical life of the Church, it remains the responsibility of parents to make sure that children do not become a distraction to those around them. Therefore, if a child is crying, or in some way in need of attention, please feel free to take him/her to the Narthex or Cry Room. You are most welcome to enter and exit the Church proper as many times as necessary. By doing this, all who are in attendance will be afforded the opportunity to worship and pray together. (Please keep in mind that we are also privileged to have a complete Sunday School Liturgy celebrated in Saint Catherine’s Chapel each week for your use as well). We ask for your cooperation. Ushers will be available to help you, if needed.
Holy Communion Announcement:
While we pray and work for the reconciliation and unity of all the world's Christians, the reality remains that there is still no intercommunion between our Orthodox Churches and the Churches of the West. This means that only baptized, chrismated, and observant Orthodox faithful are allowed to receive Holy Communion in our churches. At the same time, we warmly welcome all non-Orthodox to join us in prayer and celebration, and humbly offer to all present the Antidoro bread of fellowship at the end of the worship service. We offer this important symbol 'instead of the Gifts', in the words of the Apostle Paul, 'Till we all come to the unity of the Faith' (Eph. 4.13).
