Fellowship Today’s fellowship is hosted by the Ladies of our Philoptochos Society. Everyone is invited to Plato Hall to enjoy fellowship.

Bible Study: Bible Study Class will not be held this week.

Quote for the Week: And then, you also want not to have woes? It can't be. God loves us, but we often do not understand it. If we enjoy everything here on earth, then we will forget God. God gives us opportunities to know Him, if only we take hold of the messages. He finds a thousand ways to make us come to know Him. St. Basil says somewhere, ’Make weakness material for virtue.' No matter what evil comes upon us, if we have patience, it is possible that what we see as evil, will guide us to virtue. The greatest evil is to become estranged from God. + Elder Ieronymos of Aegina

Scripture for the Week: “For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil.” Romans 16:19

Question for the Week: What is God using in your life right now to teach you patience? Is it something you have yet been able to embrace, or is it something that you are fighting against? Do you think your reaction could change your perception?

Thought for the Week: With the school year well underway, many new and even veteran parents of school-age children struggle to find the right balance between helping children with homework, encouraging independence and keeping peace in the home! We’ve all dealt with struggles around homework and motivating our kids. Here are a few tips from Dr. Charles Fay from the Love and Logic Institute regarding how to best help your child at home with homework.

Ending Homework Hassles: One mother said it well: "I'm tired of doing battle every evening over spelling words, long division, and book reports. I thought I was done with this sort of homework when I graduated from school!" Listed below are some time-tested tips for helping your child with homework:

Help only as long as there is no frustration or anger: When homework becomes associated with negative emotions, it's no surprise that kids start to view learning as a real drag.

Help only as long as your child is working harder than you are: Say "I'll be happy to help you as long as you're working harder than I am."

Avoid sitting with your child when they are about to "get it." Many kids come to believe that they can only learn new things... or "get it"... if an adult is guiding them every step of the way. Explain this by saying, "Part of my job as your Mom (or Dad) is to help you see that you can learn without me. That's why there will be times when I let you work by yourself." 2009 - Charles Fay, Ph.D Love and Logic Institute Inc.

WEEKLY TRAY DONATIONS: At the Parish Council meeting of October 13th, discussion continued on the possibility of reducing the number of trays passed during weekly Worship Services. It was decided that effective January 2010, only one tray will be passed at the conclusion of the weekly Divine Liturgy. As you can appreciate and understand, the collection from the second tray does bring in a significant amount of revenue. Therefore it is hoped and anticipated that you will continue your support and generosity to our blessed Parish of Panagia with your gift in the one tray that will be passed each Sunday.

DCFS Christmas Gifts Since 1998 the Orthodox Churches in the Chicago area (the largest participants in this program) have provided 16,000 gifts to foster children in the Department of Children and Family Services. Assumption Church has participated in this program every year. The children's forms are now available and you may pick them up after the Divine Liturgy in Plato Hall. Thank you for your generosity. The wrapped gifts are due in Church on Sunday, November 22.

METROPOLIS CLERGY/LAITY ASSEMBLY IN MILWAUKEE: This week our Parish will be represented at the Metropolis Clergy/Laity Assembly and Philoptochos Assembly in Milwaukee Wisconsin from Wednesday, November 4th through Saturday, November 7th. In addition to our Clergy, Fr. Timothy and Fr. Athanasios, three lay delegates representing our Parish will also be attending: Mr. James Lakerdas, Mr. Ted Pappas, and Mr. Jack Woods. Representing our Ladies Philoptochos Society will be Ms. Nancy Pilafas, Mrs. Patricia Karabas, and Mrs. Eleanor Georgalas. We are grateful for the time they will be spending representing our Parish during these meetings, and also look forward to the wealth of information they will bring back for our benefit and edification.

GODPARENT SUNDAY LUNCHEON THANK YOU: The Sunday Church School would like to thank everyone who attended the luncheon following our Godparent Sunday festivities in Church. A thank you is extended to the Stewardship Committee and to the Sunday School Staff and parents for their participation in the setup/cleanup for this event. A special thank you is given to Mr. Ted Pappas and his kitchen crew who prepared our meal.

THANK YOU: We recently received a few generous donations that we would like to acknowledge. Our Parish thanks Mr. John Sandors for his gift of a new Epitaphios of the Virgin Mary. We thank John for his loving gift to our Parish’s Patron Saint and Mother of God, the Theotokos.

Our Parish also would like to thank the family of the late Peter Karras for the donation of the two beautiful Lavera (Banners) that proudly stand on the north and south walls of the Church and on each side of the Holy Altar. The two Lavera, one of Christ and the other of the Panagia, are used in our processions and on major Holy Feast Days. This gift is given in loving memory of Mr. Karras. We thank Miss Sophie Karagiannia, Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips, and Mrs. Irene Giardina for their continued love and generosity to our blessed Parish of Panagia.
