Major Gift to Greek Fire Relief Fund Announced

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios today announced a major gift of $1,000,000 to the Greek Fire Relief Fund of the Archdiocese by Mrs. Mary Jaharis. This gift was made in memory of Mrs. Jaharis’ parents, Ismene and George Spyros, who were from the Peloponnese area of Greece. This week, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America extended, to the heads of the major Greek American organizations, an invitation to a special meeting at the Archdiocese on September 24th so that each would have the opportunity to share with the members gathered what their respective associations are doing with regards to the disaster in Greece. IOCC & Local Orthodox Priests Reach Farmers in Greece’s Hard-Hit Ileia Province

On his back and through the flames that burned everything except his house, Father Ioanni carried to safety his 22 year-old son who had passed out from smoke inhalation. The wildfires that devastated Greece’s western province of Ileia spared Father Ioanni’s home but completely destroyed his father’s 600 year-old home along with its original furnishings and olive and fruit trees.
