ABOUT METROPOLITAN KALLISTOS:
His Eminence, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware was born in Bath, Somerset in 1934 and educated at Oxford where he took a double first in Classics as well as reading Theology. After entering the Orthodox Church in 1958, he traveled widely in Greece, staying particularly at the monastery of St. John on the island of Patmos where he eventually became a monk. In 1966 he was ordained a
priest and began his teaching career at Oxford as the Spalding Lecturer in Eastern Orthodox Studies. He became a fellow of
Pembroke College in 1970. In 1982, he was consecrated the titular bishop of Diokleia under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Perhaps the best-known Orthodox teacher and scholar in the world today, his books, The Orthodox Church and The Orthodox Way have become the standard works introducing the life and faith of the Christian East. He has also served the Church as a translator of liturgical texts as well as translating The Philokalia, the classic collection of Orthodox texts on spirituality, asceticism and the Jesus Prayer. St. Vladimir`s Seminary Press has published the first volume of his collected works, The Inner Kingdom.
