ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL

N E W & EXPANDED FORMAT

PARISH FESTIVAL

Sunday, April 1
Following the Divine Liturgy

Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Archdiocese Oratorical Festival Program begins at the Parish Level and is divided into two divisions; the Junior Division for students in the 7th to 9th grades and the Senior Division for teenagers in the 10th to 12th grades.

Each participant in our Parish Oratorical Festival will be eligible for a $150.00 grant to attend summer camp at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center. The two finalists in each division will receive a one week scholarship to attend summer camp at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center.

This year, we are expanding our program to include our young people in the 3rd to 6th grades. These young people will write a one page report on one of the suggested topics. They will be allowed to read their presentation and it will NOT be judged.

On Sunday, April 22nd, the Eastern Region of the Metropolis of San Francisco, formerly known as the “Central Valley”, will meet at our Parish following the Divine Liturgy for the District competition. The top two speakers in the Jr. and Sr. Divisions will advance to the Metropolis level. The Metropolis Oratorical Festival will be held at St. Nicholas Ranch on Saturday, May 5th. The top speaker in each division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals and represent the Metropolis of San Francisco at the National level.

The eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which will be the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships in the amount of $2000, $1500, and $1000 to the top three speakers in each division. In addition, those finalists who receive a rank of Honorable Mention are awarded a $500 United States Savings Bond.

Make plans to join us for this important date as our young people share their thoughts about our precious Christian Orthodox Faith!
