HOLY WEEK AND PASCHA
REV. FR. JON MAGOULIAS, APRIL 20-27

Once again, by the Grace of God, we are entering the blessed season of Holy Week. Once again we are invited to follow the steps of the Bridegroom of the Church, Jesus Christ, to His Divine Passion. The hymns of the Church call us to “accompany Him, and with minds purified from the pleasures of this life, and let us be crucified and die with Him, that we may live with Him.” Believing this to be true, we are able to become partakers of His Resurrection! This is THE only way to truly feel the joy of His glorious Resurrection!

The beginning of this meaningful time of the year dates back to the apostolic era. From the earliest days of the Christian Church the faithful have spiritually prepared themselves through fasting and prayer. It is likely that the Apostles themselves encouraged the people to do so in accordance with the words of the Lord Who said: “…the days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” (Matt. 9:15)

The Passion of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ during Holy Week is without a doubt the most important and beautiful opportunity for our souls to be spiritually uplifted. The divine services create a moving and meaningful atmosphere during worship. Experiencing the holy and venerable Passion of Christ brings us to a deeper relationship with our Lord; without the Crucifixion there can be no Resurrection.. Only those whose lives are filled with indifference and sin are apathetic to the sacredness of these holy days.

Firm belief in the Resurrected Lord is a mystical reality! He is the Source bestowing true happiness and joy. Jesus comes to evangelize the great joy to all people. Joy to the heart and soul of all people. It is not a simple promise, however. He offered it first to His disciples so that they would remain faithful forever. In the tragic moments of His ministry, prior to His Passion, He confirmed to them by saying, your joy no one will take from you. (John 16:22)

Our Holy Church calls us to live and experience Holy Week with contrition and awe. We are called to be conscientious and active participants in the Passion of our Redeemer so that we can feel the greatness of His love and compassion in the Resurrection.
