ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL
N E W & EXPANDED FORMAT
PARISH FESTIVAL
Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival has provided Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Archdiocese Oratorical Festival Program begins at the Parish Level and is divided into two divisions; the Junior Division for students in the 7th to 9th grades and the Senior Division for teenagers in the 10th to 12th grades.
Each participant in our Parish Oratorical Festival will be eligible for a $150.00 grant to attend summer camp at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center. The two finalists in each division will receive a one week scholarship to attend summer camp at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center.
This year, we expanded our program to include our young people in the 3rd to 6th grades. These young people presented topics on aspects of our Faith which included topics about passages from Holy Scripture and the lives of the Saints. They did an outstanding job and we are very proud of them.
On Sunday, April 22nd, the Eastern Region of the Metropolis of San Francisco, formerly known as the “Central Valley”, was held at our Parish. We had representatives from our Parish and from the Church of the Annunciation in Sacramento.
The finalists of the regional Oratorical Festival are:
Izabel Crosby - Jr. Division, Modesto
Alicia Gavrilis - Jr. Division, Modesto
Christopher Letson - Sr. Division, Modesto
Stephan Word - Sr. Division, Modesto
We wish to congratulate the regional finalists who will advance to the Metropolis level. The Metropolis Oratorical Festival will be held at St. Nicholas Ranch on Saturday, May 5th. The top speaker in each division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals and represent the Metropolis of San Francisco at the National level.
The eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which will be the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships in the amount of $2000, $1500, and $1000 to the top three speakers in each division. In addition, those finalists who receive a rank of Honorable Mention are awarded a $500 United States Savings Bond.
