Wisdom from the Fathers:
Everyone is made in God’s image; but to be in His likeness is granted only to those who through great love have brought their own freedom into subjection to God. For only when we do not belong to ourselves do we become like Him who through love has reconciled us to Himself. No one achieves this unless he persuades his soul not to be distracted by the false glitter of this life. St. Diadochos of Photiki
Dress Your Best:
This is a friendly reminder to dress your best for Divine Liturgy. Why? Because it not only reflects an inner attitude of respect and reverence for God (and yourself) but it also shapes that inner attitude. God will accept us as we are but we must ask ourselves: Would we dress like this if we were going to a wedding or a funeral, to a dinner at a nice restaurant, or a meeting with a special dignitary? When we come to liturgy we are attending the great wedding banquet between Christ the Bridegroom and His bride—the Church (us). At a minimum we should not wear jeans, shorts, or tennis shoes. Men should wear a shirt with a collar and women should dress modestly.
Archdiocese Oratorical Festival
A letter and sponsorship form were mailed recently. Please help us to co-host this event on June 12-14 by making a generous donation. Several sponsorship levels and opportunities are available for everyone to participate. Thank you!
Church Fathers Speak: The truly devout soul knows the God of all. True devotion is simply to do God’s will. This means to gain knowledge of god by being free from envy, self-restrained, gentle, as generous as possible, kindly, not quarrelsome, and by acquiring whatever else accords with God’s will. St. Anthony the Great
On Time for God?
This is a reminder to be on-time for Sunday Divine Liturgy. The Liturgy of the Word (leading up to the Epistle, Gospel and Sermon) is just as important as the Liturgy of the Eucharist (from Great Entrance to Dismissal) and it sets the foundation for receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Arriving 30-45-60 minutes after the start of Liturgy is inexcusable and shows a blasphemous attitude towards God and shows disrespect towards our fellow worshippers. It is a poor witness of our faith to others especially visitors, catechumens and new converts. It is a poor example for our children and young people who learn and repeat the same bad habits, handing them down from one generation to another. It leads to general ignorance regarding the doctrines and traditions of the Orthodox Faith. The instruction to not receive the Eucharist if one has not heard the epistle, gospel and sermon is given to avoid the possibility of incurring God’s wrath rather than His blessing in Holy Communion. Please, let us dedicate ourselves to this most important discipline of being on-time for God.
