Think on These Things: Those who truly pray know what most around them either do not know or choose to ignore: centering life in the insatiable demands of the ego is the sure path to doom…They know that life confined to the self is a prison, a joy-killing, neurosis-producing, disease-fomenting prison. Eugene Peterson

Wisdom from the Fathers: Everyone who has truly been clothed in humility becomes like Him who came down from His exalted place and hid the splendor of His majesty, concealing His glory in lowliness, so that the created world should not be utterly consumed at the sight of Him. Creation could not behold Him unless He took part of it to Himself and thus conversed with it: only thus was creation able to hear the words of His mouth face to face. St. Isaac the Syrian

Church Fathers Speak: If you were not subject to temptation and not recognizing your infirmities, and you saw only your own improvements and placed your hope of salvation on them, then you could fall into extreme haughtiness and incurable deception. For when the enemy cannot conquer someone through passions and infirmities, then he places into the mind haughtiness and conceit; from which the person falls into deception and darkening of the mind.
