ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Parish Assembly Meeting-will be held immediately following today’s Divine Liturgy. This meeting has been reset in accordance with our By Laws and was necessitated by the failure to achieve a forum of 40 members in good standing at the October 4th Assembly. The agenda items remain (1) approving the revised parish By Laws to conform with the Uniform Parish Regulations and (2) nominating and electing of delegates to attend the upcoming Metropolis Clergy-Laity Assembly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 5-7. Please join us. We look forward to seeing you.

Metropolis Clergy Laity Details- November 5-6-7, 2009 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will include a trip to the new St. Iakovos Camp & Retreat center as well as youth ministry training sessions titled “Called to Protect” and “Nuts and Bolts”. Several workshops including one on chanting are scheduled. In addition, the Metropolis Assemblies for thePhiloptochos and Choir will also take place. What an excellent way for our community to gather together.

New Youth Minister: We are happy to announce the hiring of a new part-time parish youth minister, Rebekah Moll (pronounced “mall”), to begin on November 1st. Rebekah is a life-long member of St. Mary OCA Cathedral where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She also volunteered as counselor at the summer church camp program. Rebekah is married to Doug Moll and is currently working as language arts teacher at Spring Lake Park high school. Please help us welcome Rebekah next Sunday during social hour where you can meet and greet her.

Think On These Things: It’s not about how many breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away.

Saturday Vespers Resumes- The Vespers is a relatively brief (45 minutes) worship service, consisting of prayers, petitions and hymns, that is an excellent preparation for Sunday Divine Liturgy. If one cannot attend Liturgy on Sunday, the Vespers is an adequate substitute although not a regular one.

Lamb Dinner - In honor of OXI Day, the Greek Festival Committee will prepare a lamb dinner during Social Hour on Sunday October 25th. Dinner includes lamb, rice, Greek Salad, dessert and beverages. Cost: Adults $5.00, Children are free. $1.00 of every meal sold will be donated to Father Stelios Sitaras family in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Come Receive The Light National Orthodox Radio Program: The only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast, is a weekly program that features interviews with noted Orthodox Christian clergy, theologians, and lay leaders on theological, spiritual, pastoral, and modern social issues. Heard on the radio in more than 100 cities in the United States and the Bahamas, this unique weekly broadcast offers the ancient, Christ-centered message of Orthodox Christianity to the modern world. You can listen to past programs on demand and find many other online resources to deepen your faith at www.MYOCN.net. Local broadcast: Saturdays 5:00pm on KKMS 980AM.

It’s That Time Again- Basketball season is just around the corner. The Metropolis of Chicago GOYAL Family Basketball Tournament will be hosted by St. Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church in Overland Park, Kansas on the weekend of February 5-7, 2010. Please mark your calendar. Start warming up.

Wisdom From The Fathers: Cheerfulness consists in not regarding things as our own, but as entrusted to us by God for the benefit of our fellow servants. It consists in scattering them abroad generously with joy and magnanimity, not reluctantly or under compulsion. St. Symeon the New Theologian

Adult Sunday School: Don’t forget that we also have educational time for parents and all adults in the nave after Orthros ends and before Liturgy begins, approximately 9:30 to 10:00am. Currently, Fr. Rick is covering the classic book, “The Orthodox Way” by Kallistos Ware. Today we will review Chapter Five. The lessons are stand alone so don’t worry about falling behind if you miss a class.

Stewardship 2010 Program- “Come & See” is the theme. Everyone should receive a 2010 stewardship brochure with their third quarter statement. Please begin careful consideration of committing your Time, Talents and Treasures for the coming year. God asks us to give as He does, generously and sacrificially. Your involvement and support is essential to fulfill our mission of preaching the gospel, teaching the commandments, healing the sick and sanctifying the faithful.

The Church Fathers Speak: If you fall into some transgression, quickly turn to the realization of your weakness and be aware of it. For God allows you to fall for the very purpose of making you more aware of your weakness, so that you may learn to despise yourself and be despised by others. Know that without such desire it is impossible for beneficent self-disbelief to be born and take root in you. This is the foundation and beginning of true humility, since it is based on the realization, by experience, of your impotence and unreliability. St. Theophan the Recluse
