THE MOTHER OF GOD

Julius Caesar ruled much of the world and named the fifth Roman month, July, after himself. He was betrayed and assassinated in the Senate and then replaced by his adopted son, Octavius. Octavius, who ruled as Caesar Augustus, ruled an even greater Roman Empire than Julius. He would be outdone in no way, giving the sixth month his own name: Augustus.

This decision indeed gave the month an air of royalty. However, the month was really made “august” (inspiring awe or admiration; majestic) with the August 15th Dormition of the Virgin Mary. She, the Queen of the Heavens, made the month truly royal and sublime.

As Christians, we devote ourselves to God through a 14-day fast which begins on August 1st and is completed with the celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15th.

The Virgin Mary is also called “Panaghia” (All-Holy), “Theotokos” (God-bearer), and many other titles which reflect affection for her, relate her miracles, and reflect her role in the salvation of mankind.

She is often referred to as the “New Eve.” She is so-named because she fulfilled completely that which the first Eve did not: the Theotokos was obedient to the will of God. She remained steadfast in the fulfilling of her own words to the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation, “Let it be done unto me according to your word” (Luke 1).

Because she accepted God’s will to give birth to Him (hence the name God-bearer), she is both a means and a model for our salvation. She accepts and fulfills God’s will. She becomes “God Bearer.” She thus realizes holiness and salvation.

In doing God’s will and living a sacramental and Christian life, we likewise become “God bearers” and find salvations. The month of August and the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God mark the end of the Church’s calendar year. Through Her intercessions may be enter the new Church year in September with new and redoubled resolve for seeking the Kingdom of God and joyfully fulfilling His holy will.
